The first McDonalds in Japan opened on July 20, 1971 and was located in Tokyo. There are currently 3,164 McDonalds restaurants in Japan. The number of McDonalds restaurants in a country is an indication of the influence of Western culture and globalization in that country. The operation of McDonalds restaurants could also have a direct impact on the health of a country's citizens. Around 5% of the population of Japan are obese.

Alcohol consumption
Every year the Japanese consume 0.2 liters of alcohol per capita. This volume consists of 19.2% beer, 4.1% wine, 52% distilled alcohol and 24.7% other alcohol.
